| THE FRASSATI TRAIL IN CAMPANIA inaugurated June 23, 1996 WHERE: in Sala Consilina (Salerno) TIME: gone/return h 8.30 ELEVATION DIFFERENCE: climb m 989; slant m 853 DIFFICULTY: EE (due to the length) The itinerary travels along the mountains of Maddalena, in the area of the Vallo di Diano, belonging to ancient Lucania. The route starts from the paleo-Christian baptistery of "Marcellianum" (the only one in the world to be built directly on a spring) and, after passing through the ruins of the Sant'Angelo monastery, it reaches first the peak of the San Michele sanctuary and then that of the Madonna di Sito Alto (both destinations of a dual yearly pilgrimage). The suggested return rout is the "pilgrims' path", leading to the historical center of town after passing through the Castle. All intermediate points in the trail can easily be reached by car, so the duration of the excursion can be adapted to one's own abilities and time availability, reducing difficulty to E. |
